Welcome to the Ship Rock blog!

For as long as anyone can remember, residents of the Beckley area in southern West Virginia have been hiking to the edge of the gorge of Piney Creek to visit the geologic landmark known time-out-of-mind as Ship Rock. A house-sized block of sandstone loosened from an adjacent cliff, the rock has inspired the imagination of locals at least since the first European hunters roamed the flats west of the gorge and certainly before when indigenous peoples lived in the level woodlands near the rock.
